چکیده
Abstract. This contribution is intended as both a course on differential geometry and an illustration of the involvement of differential geometry in the calculus of variations, in articulation with the occurrence of irreversibility. Potential applications in terms of the continuous symmetries of the constitutive laws of dissipative materials shall be mentionned, leading potentially to a systematic and predictive approach of the construction of the so-called master curves.

Gyarmati's Variational Principle of Dissipative Processes
Like mechanics and electrodynamics, the fundamental laws of the thermodynamics of dissipative processes can be compressed into a variational principle. This variational principle both in its differential (local) and in integral (global) forms was formulated by Gyarmati helped by the present author in 1965. This principle was applied to several fields of irreversible processes: first of all, his...
متن کاملOptimal Scaling of the Mala Algorithm with Irreversible Proposals for Gaussian Targets
Abstract. It is known that reversible Langevin diffusions in confining potentials converge to equilibrium exponentially fast. Adding a divergence free component to the drift of a Langevin diffusion accelerates its convergence to stationarity. However such a stochastic differential equation (SDE) is no longer reversible. In this paper, we analyze the optimal scaling of MCMC algorithms constructe...
متن کاملThermodynamics of Irreversible Processes across a Boundary: Elementary Principles
The commonly used thermodynamic variables are generalized so as to take account of irreversible processes across a thin boundary separating a system from its surroundings. This permits one to relate heat transfer and work performance in irreversible processes to those carried out reversibly. The commonly used functions of state have been generalized to include the contribution of irreversible c...
متن کاملStatistical mechanical theory for steady state systems. VI. Variational principles.
Several variational principles that have been proposed for nonequilibrium systems are analyzed. These include the principle of minimum rate of entropy production due to Prigogine [Introduction to Thermodynamics of Irreversible Processes (Interscience, New York, 1967)], the principle of maximum rate of entropy production, which is common on the internet and in the natural sciences, two principle...
متن کاملConservative Hyperbolic Model for Compressible Two-phase Flow with Different Phase Pressures and Temperatures
A model for two-phase compressible flow is presented, the derivation of which is based on extended irreversible thermodynamics principles. An isentropic two-phase flow model proposed earlier and the hyperbolic model for heat transfer underlie the developed theory of this paper. The governing equations of the model form a hyperbolic system of differential equations in conservation-law form. A se...
